The Body Explained

The Lymphatic System

Your body’s cleanup, defense, and recovery network

It’s not just about swelling

The lymphatic system regulates tissue fluid, transports proteins and other materials, and supports immune surveillance. When its transport capacity is impaired, tissues can become swollen or uncomfortable.

Moving fluid near the surface does not necessarily address what is happening deeper inside.

Superficial and deep pathways

Superficial lymphatics collect fluid from skin and tissues beneath it. Deep lymphatics serve muscles, joints, and internal organs, often traveling alongside blood vessels. These pathways communicate, but they do not always follow identical routes or respond to the same mechanical influences.

A transport system, not an open drain

Blind-ended lymphatic capillaries collect excess interstitial fluid. Larger vessels move lymph through nodes before returning it to venous blood. One-way valves, vessel contractions, muscle movement, and breathing all contribute.

Direction matters. So does a functional pathway.

When transport struggles

Persistent lymphatic dysfunction may contribute to protein-rich swelling, inflammation, tissue thickening, and fibrosis. Circulation, immunity, breathing, and muscular activity all interact with lymphatic function.

Where Medical Massage Therapy fits in

I consider posture, breathing, muscular activity, and superficial and deeper influences on fluid movement. Depending on the situation, gentle manual lymphatic techniques, myofascial work, and movement may be appropriate. Established lymphedema may also require compression, exercise, skin care, and specialist treatment. New or unexplained swelling warrants medical evaluation.

The goal is to support the conditions that allow transport systems to function—not simply push fluid elsewhere.
